Overview: Hardware

NEW feature: every PAL (pat.) can now support monitoring tasks! It records total time, total deployment time, and at fixed intervals temperature and signal generation.

PAL has a very robust, black, UV-protected housing. It is light, buoyant and has an internal shock-absorber to increase deployment safety.

Product range includes four devices: Porpoise-PAL, 10kHz-PAL, Wideband-PAL and Whale-PAL. Meets EU specifications (Regulation (EU) 2020/967).  Further signal types can be generated upon request.

Designed, manufactured and tested in Germany. Two year warranty against manufacturing defects.
Key features:
  • Independently tested
  • Spindle shaped
  • Easy to deploy
  • Audible functional check
  • Very durable, UV protected
  • Replaceable battery
  • Pressure rating 320 m
Technical specifications:
  • Data recording (optional): total time, deployment time, temperature, signal generation
  • 250 g light, buoyant in water, helps pull nets open
  • 185 mm long, 60 mm diameter
  • Dual attachment via 6 mm and 11 mm holes at each end

Porpoise - PAL

The Porpoise-PAL imitates porpoise warning signals and uses their ultrasonic communication frequency of 133 kHz to specifically warn them of dangers. Porpoise attention and echolocation intensity are increased. As opposed to pingers, side-effects such as deterrence and effects on other species are minimised. PAL is optimised for use in fisheries.

A bycatch reduction of 80 % in the Western Baltic Sea (Chladek et al. 2020; Fish Res) was independently proven by the Thünen-Institute of Baltic Sea Fisheries. Porpoise-PAL ultrasonic clicks are not audible by fish, most other animal species and seals: attraction to the nets or depredation on fish were not observed. Porpoise-PAL are attached every 200 m to the nets floatline.

10 kHz - PAL

10 kHz-PAL comply with regulations for bycatch mitigation devices in both the US and the EU (Regulation (EU) 2020/967; NOAA Harbor porpoise take reduction plan). These deterrents successfully reduce marine mammal bycatch in fisheries.

Compared to pingers of other manufacturers, the 10 kHz-PAL is positively buoyant and floats. It helps pull the net open. The battery is replaceable. The devices are easily attached. Shaping and handling were extensively tested with fishermen. Inaudible to fish. 10 kHz-PAL are attached to the nets floatline every 100 meters / yards.

Wideband - PAL

Wideband-PAL comply with bycatch mitigation regulations in the EU (Regulation (EU) 2020/967). They cover a wide range of sounds to prevent habituation of the animals and successfully reduce marine mammal bycatch in fisheries. Wideband-PAL reduce bycatch by 60-100%, as independently shown in Icelandic and Bulgarian fisheries.

Compared to pingers of other manufacturers, the Wideband-PAL is positively buoyant and floats. It helps pull the net open. The battery is replaceable. The devices are easily attached. Shaping and handling were extensively tested with fishermen. Inaudible to fish. Wideband-PAL are attached to the nets float-line every 200 meters / yards.

Whale - PAL

The Whale - PAL produces a wide range of sounds to deter large whales from colliding with and attacking boats. The Whale - PALis towed behind the boat on a steel line. A small otter board keeps it at a depth of about 2 meters. Tested by over 30 sailors at speeds up to 12 knots.

The stainless steel tow line is simply attached to the stern rail.
Breaking load of all connections > 140 kg. Shape and handling have been extensively tested with fishermen and sailors and optimized with Bert Frisch from Trans Ocean (Verein zur Förderung des Hochseesegeln e.V.). Does not prevent dolphins from approaching.
